In this experiment, we will create a cloud inside of a plastic bottle. There is a great deal of amazing science going on in this very simple experiment. In fact, this experiment is so simple that anyone can do it at home with common materials.
We begin by pumping air into a plastic bottle and then quickly releasing the pressure. This rapidly cools off the air and causes the water vapor to condense into water droplets. This forms a dense cloud in a bottle and once the pressure is releases it takes less than a second to form!
This experiment demonstrates how clouds form in the atmosphere. In the atmosphere, evaporation lakes and rivers causes water vapor to rise into the air. The higher it goes, the cooler it gets and eventually it condenses back into water droplets in the form of a cloud.
Inside of our bottle, the rapid decompression of the air is the cooling mechanism which forms the cloud.
